Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh met with India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, to discuss ways to modernise the sugar industry. Their talks focused on introducing drones and new farm machinery and improving sugar research with mobile soil testing laboratories.
Singh gave an overview of Fiji’s sugar industry and explained the government’s efforts to improve and update the sector. He also spoke about ways Fiji and India could cooperate to promote harmony among different communities.

Another key topic was the plan to digitise Girmit Records and build a Girmit Museum at the Girmit Centre in Lautoka, which will help preserve the history of indentured labourers in Fiji.
High Commissioner Mehta assured Singh that India remains committed to supporting Fiji’s sugar industry and working together on projects that promote cultural unity.
