Sao Paulo: Brazil’s centre-south Sugar production in the Centre-south region of Brazil fell by 9.7% in the first half of July compared to the same period last year, reaching 2.94 million metric tons, according to industry group UNICA. The decrease was attributed to rains that slowed down cane harvesting.
The sugar output was lower than the projections made by most analysts. A survey by S&P Global Commodity Insights had projected sugar production at 3.14 million tons.
Sugarcane crushing during this period reached 43.17 million tons, marking an 11% decline from the previous year, as detailed in UNICA’s production report. Early July rains in parts of the centre-south region hindered fieldwork. Analysts had expected cane crush to reach 45.8 million tons.
The cane allocation to sugar production, known as the sugar mix, also fell short of estimates at 49.8%. Ethanol production decreased by 6.2% year-on-year to 2.12 billion litres.
