Dubai: Sugar output in Egypt this season is expected to reach 2.85 million tonnes, said officials associated with the agriculture ministry.
Mostafa Abdel Gawad, head of the ministry’s Sugar Crops Council said, “The locally produced sugar from sugar beet and cane would cater to around 90% of the country’s needs and we need to import sweetener in small quantities to meet domestic needs.”
The ban imposed on sugar imports since June has expired and the country can now import white and raw sugar.
“The increase in local sugar output is attributed to a new sugar refinery in Minya located in the south of Egypt that will produce 450,000 tonnes of sugar up to March or April 2022 and this would help the country to export sugar,” added Abdel Gawad.
