Maharashtra is all set to make a new record in sugar production this season. Though sugar mills in some regions of the state have closed their operations, cane crushing continues in the other parts.
According to the data released by the sugar commissionerate, a total of 197 sugar mills participated in the current season and have produced 1081.78 lakh quintal (108.17 lakh tonnes) sugar by crushing 1046.12 lakh tonne sugarcane with a recovery rate of 10.34 per cent till March 14, 2022.
According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the revised estimate of sugar output from Maharashtra has been increased from 117 lakh tonne to 126 lakh tonne for the 2021-22 season.
Till March 14, 2022, a total of 13 sugar mills, including 12 from the Kolhapur region and one from the Nagpur region, have closed crushing operations.
