Sugar prices at peak as Sri Lanka enters economic crisis

Sugar price has skyrocketed in Sri Lanka as citizens are witnessing an economic crisis that had occurred never before.

The weakening currency, as well as rising inflation, has fuelled the crisis and the people are trying to survive through everything. People are standing in long queues to buy essential commodities including sugar despite the hike in its price.

The sugar rate has touched Rs 240 per kg (Sri Lankan Rupee)  in a supermarket in Colorado and poor people can’t even afford to buy the commodity at such high prices.

The inflation in the island country touched 17.5% in February and the nation is facing a shortage of essential commodities including sugar.
People have launched protests and taken to the streets blaming the government for the unexpected situation the country is going through.
