Sugar Prices in Bangladesh likely to rise after Eid

Sugar prices in the country would increase after the Eid-ul-Fitr due to rising prices of the sweetener in the international market, said Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi.

He was speaking at a national seminar on Ayurvedic medicine at the Secretariat on Thursday.

The country is importing sugar to meet 99% of the domestic demand and a hike in global prices would affect the domestic prices too.

Before Eid, the prices of sugar will not be increased. After Eid the prices will be increased as the import cost is increasing, he said. “We are taking steps to reduce VAT on sugar and other tariffs,” he further added.
