The Bangladesh government has lowered the prices of sugar in the retail market by Tk 3 to Tk 104 per kg, said the Commerce Ministry.
The revised prices will come into effect from April 9.
The commerce ministry issued a notice stating that the prices of packaged sugar will be Rs 109 per kg and unpackaged sugar will be sold at Rs 104 per kg from Sunday.
The steps were taken two weeks after the government asked the refiners to cut sugar prices following the reduction of import duty for raw and refined sugar by the National Board of Revenue.
The government had withdrawn customs duty on February 26 and reduced the regulatory duty on the import of sugar to 25% from 30% to increase the supply of sweetener and lower its prices in the domestic market.
With immediate effect, the NBR withdrew specific duty on importing raw sugar by Tk 3,000 and refined sugar by Tk 6,000 per tonne.
