Sugar prices in the domestic market of Dhaka are soaring. As per the media report, it is being sold at Tk 115 per kg. Lower supply by the refiners are being attributed for the price rise.
The government had on October 6 raised the price of sugar by Tk 6 per kg following the demand made by the sugar refiners taking the retail prices for unpacked sugar to Tk 90 per kg and packed sugar at Tk 95 per kg.
According to the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, the refiners have cut sugar production by nearly 50% and the sugar price at the mill gate was higher than the government-set rate.
Traders were also charging higher prices for the commodity due to supply shortage, noticed the directorate.
