Bengaluru: The drought and flood have hit sugar production in Karnataka. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), 63 sugar mills in Karnataka are in operation on 15th January, 2020, who have produced 21.90 lakh tonnes of sugar, as compared to 26.76 lakh tonnes produced by 65 sugar mills in 2018-19 Sugar Season on 15th January, 2019.
Flood has caused massive loss to the cane growers in Belagavi district. Recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the sugarcane and sugar industry of Karnataka is considered to be the backbone of the farmers here, but due to the drought here this year, the cane production will decline and both the farmers and sugar industry are affected. He said the government was not only solving problems of farmers but also working towards a better future for them.
The Prime Minister said that the Government is continuously working to uplift the sugarcane and sugar industry in Karnataka.
