Sugar production hits 220.91 lakh tonnes till February 15; 13 mills stop crushing operations

According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), as on 15th February 2022, 220.91 lakh tonnes of sugar have been produced by the mills, as compared to 209.11 lakh tonnes produced on the corresponding date of last year. Out of 516 sugar mills which had started crushing in 2021-22 SS, 13 sugar mills have stopped their crushing operations so far. Last year, 496 sugar mills had operated, out of which 32 had stopped crushing on the corresponding date last year.

In Maharashtra, 197 sugar mills were operating as on 15th February 2022 and had produced 86.15 lakh tonnes of sugar, compared with 75.46 lakh tonnes produced last year same period. Last year 185 mills had operated, out of which 2 mills had stopped their crushing on the corresponding date.

In U.P. 117 sugar mills are in operation currently while 3 mills have stopped their crushing. These mills in the State have produced 59.32 lakh tonnes of sugar till 15th February 2022, compared with 65.13 lakh tonnes produced by 120 mills on the corresponding date of last year. Last year 4 sugar mills have closed their crushing operations as on 15th February, 2021.

In case of Karnataka, till 15th February 2022, 72 sugar mills had commenced operations and produced 44.85 lakh tonnes of sugar, as compared to 39.07 lakh tonnes produced by 66 sugar mills last year same period. Out of 72 sugar mills which went for crushing this season, 2 sugar mills have stopped crushing as on 15th February 2022. Last year in the same period, out of 66 sugar mills which operated, 17 sugar mills had ended their crushing operations by 15th Feb 2021.

Gujarat had produced 6.91 lakh tonnes of sugar till 15th February 2022 with 15 sugar mills in operation. Last year, similar number of sugar mills were in operation and they had produced 6.55 lakh tonnes of sugar till 15th February 2021.

In case of Tamil Nadu, 26 sugar mills commenced their crushing operations so far for 2021-22 SS and have produced 3.60 lakh tonnes of sugar, as compared to 2.47 lakh tonnes produced by 25 sugar mills in 2020-21 SS on the corresponding date.

The remaining States of Andhra Pradesh & Telangana, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Odisha have collectively produced 20.08 lakh tonnes of sugar till 15th February, 2022.

1 mill in Telangana, 4 mills in Bihar, 3 mills in Punjab, have ended their crushing operations so far in the current season.

As per reports from the trade, around 50 lakh tonnes of sugar export have been contracted for so far. Out of which, about 31.50 lakh tonnes of sugar have been physically exported from India upto 31st January’ 2022 in the current sugar year starting from 1st October’ 2021, as compared to about 9.20 lakh tonnes exported last year during the corresponding period. Further, it is reported that over 8 lakh tonnes of sugar is in pipeline to be exported in the month of February, 2022.

On the ethanol front, out of the requirement of 95 crore ltr given by OMCs in its 4th cycle, about 39 crore ltrs have been offered by the suppliers. OMCs are currently examining the bids and are expected to do the allocations shortly. However, so far for the 21-22 Ethanol supply year, OMCs have already allocated about 385 crore ltrs of ethanol from different feed stocks.
