New Delhi: Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh commenced the crushing season, and many mills will start soon. According to the state government’s projection, in 2019-2020 sugar season, 121 sugar mills may participate in cane crushing. According to the reports, 13 mills in the state have crushed 1.88 lakh tons sugarcane and produced 15,000 tons new sugar at an average recovery of 8 per cent.
In a press release, ISMA said, “The sugarcane acreage in Uttar Pradesh, the leading sugarcane and sugar producing state in the country is seen to be slightly lower, as compared to 2018-19 sugar season. Taking into account the crop condition, weather conditions and area under the high yielding cane varieties in the state, an improvement in yield per hectare is expected. Hence, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh in 2019-20 Sugar Season is estimated to be around 120 lakh tons, which is more or less at the same level of 118.21 lakh tons produced in 2018-19 Sugar Season.”
Sugarcane farmers in the state are worried as their past dues have not been cleared yet, and the new season is almost commenced. Many sugar mills in the state owe cane dues to farmers.
Issuing warning against the defaulter sugar mills, UP government had set a deadline of October 31 to pay all the arrears of sugarcane farmers. But they failed to pay the dues before the deadline. Commissioner, Sugar and Cane, Sanjay R. Bhoosreddy issued a stern direction to sugar mills to clear all cane dues before starting the crushing season.
