According to the news agency Reuters, Cuba may set a record of producing the lowest sugar in 100 years with the output of more than two-thirds of targets.
Cuba had set a target of producing 1.2 million tonnes of raw sugar this year. However, as the season is nearing an end, the country is likely to harvest 816,000 tonnes, the lowest since 1908.
Yearly domestic consumption of sugar in Cuba is around 600,000 to 700,000 tonnes and it has signed an agreement to sell China 400,000 tonnes of sugar annually. It is not clear whether the country will reduce domestic consumption or lower the export to China.
