Sugar production reaches 254 lakh tonnes; 37 sugar mills currently operational: NFCSF

The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) has released sugar production updates till April 15.

According to data released by the NFCSF, as of April 15, 2025, crushing for the 2024-25 season is underway in 37 sugar mills across the country. A total of 2713.28 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, resulting in the production of 254.25 lakh tonnes of sugar. In comparison, during the same period in the previous season, 74 sugar mills were operational, and crushing had reached 3066.20 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 311.65 lakh tonnes of sugar.

In the ongoing season, 533 sugar mills participated in crushing operations, compared to 535 sugar mills last season, according to the sugar body.

The sugar recovery rate in the country is lower than in the previous season. As of April 15, 2025, the average sugar recovery rate stands at 9.37%, compared to 10.16% during the same period in the previous season.

As per NFCSF data, in terms of state-wise production, mills in Maharashtra have crushed 848.95 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 80.65 lakh tonnes of sugar.

In Uttar Pradesh, sugar mills have crushed 937.63 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 90.95 lakh tonnes of sugar. Sugar production in Karnataka has reached 40.40 lakh tonnes after crushing 475.29 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, according to the sugar body.

Experts say the decline in sugar production across the three major producing states—Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh—has contributed to the drop in production figures for this crushing season.

In the previous season, sugar production was reported at 319 lakh tonnes, and in the ongoing season, production is estimated to reach 259 lakh tonnes, according to the NFCSF.
