New Delhi: The sugar season 2020-21 is around the corner, but sugar mills have yet not cleared all cane dues of previous seasons. As on September 11, sugar mills owed nearly Rs 13,000 crore to cane farmers in the season 2019-2020.
The millers have paid Rs 62,591 crore to the farmers out of total Rs 75,585 crore for the season 2019-20, said Raosaheb Danve, Minister of State for food and consumer affairs for food and consumers affairs in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
Apart from the pending dues of the current season, the sugar mills are yet Rs 548 crore for the 2018-19 season, Rs 242 crore for 2017-18 season and Rs 1899 crore for 2016-17 season. Overall sugar mills owe Rs 15,683 crore.
Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh have to pay the most amount to cane growers. Recently, UP sugarcane minister Suresh Rana had asked the sugar mills to remain prepared for the upcoming cane crushing season. Minister also warned of strict action against the mills if they fail to clear cane arrears as soon as possible.
