With the conclusion of the Maharashtra assembly polls, the sugarcane crushing season is gaining momentum across the state. The Sugar Commissioner’s office has issued crushing licenses to 175 sugar mills so far, with more than 25 mills still awaiting approval. The crushing process had slowed down due to the state elections, as over 75 sugar mill owners were contesting the polls. Some emerged victorious, while others faced defeat. Now that the elections are over, the crushing process is picking up pace.
As per report, a total of 207 factories applied for crushing licenses this season. Of these, 175 have already been granted licenses. The applications of nine mills are currently under review, while 12 mills failed to meet the required conditions and have been asked to resubmit their applications. Private mills are ahead of cooperative mills in securing their licenses. To date, 83 cooperative mills and 92 private mills have received approval. As of November 25, 65 sugar mills, including 29 cooperative and 36 private mills, have begun operations in Maharashtra.
