Smuggling of sugar has affected the sales of sugar in Moldova. It has forced Germany’s Sudzucker to suspend the activity of its factory in Falesti. The factory will remain shut till April 2021 as the sale has been reduced in the market.
Sudzucker Moldova stated in a press release that sales in Moldova dropped due to the smuggling of tens of thousands of tonnes of sugar, while sales to the EU under Moldova’s free trade agreement plunged as well because of the oversupply on the European market.
The company is a leading producer of sugar from beet in the Republic of Moldova. The company owns three factories, two are in Drochia and one in Falesti. The company had in 2018 produced 52,000 tonnes of sugar which accounts for 70% of total production in Moldova.
