São Paulo: The sugar mills in the center-south region increased the pace of sugarcane crushing in 2022-23 season which resulted in beating the market estimates in the second half of April, said industry group Unica on Tuesday.
The sugarcane crushing in late April was down 19.7% to 23.82 million tonnes compared to the preceding year but is above expectations. The S&P Global Platts, the financial information provider, had expected it to be 21.26 million tonnes.
The sugar output was down 38.7% to 934,000 tonnes year-on year while the ethanol output was 1.09 billion litres, down 15.8%, stated Unica.
According to Unica, 180 plants have begun operations by end-April as against 85 in the first 15 days of the month.
According to Reuters, Antonio De Padua Rodrigues, technical director, Unica, said, that the crushing pace was accelerating rapidly but that yields were still very discrepant between fields – even as most mills delayed their activities in hopes of better yields.
The mills had allocated around 62.8% of crushing for ethanol production as against 55.5% during last year, noted Unica.
