Sugarcane cultivation in Bangladesh’s Madaripur district gaining popularity

Madaripur: Sugarcane cultivation has become popular in Bangladesh’s Madaripur district with the cultivation area increased to 678 hectares from 580 hectares last year.

GMA Gafur, deputy director of Madaripur Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said, “The suitable weather and soil has helped in good yield, and farming has gained popularity in the region. We are promoting the farmers to take up cane cultivation which has increased in the cane cultivation area.”

The use of high yielding varieties has helped farmers to produce quality cane, increasing their profit with minimum use of fertilizers and low labour cost.

Speaking about the sugar industry, then recently sugar prices in the country witnessed after the Finance Ministry had proposed to increase the specific duty and regulatory duty for both refined and raw sugar imports.
