Sugarcane farmers call off 28-day long protest over pending dues

Phagwara: Following the meeting with Punjab Agriculture Minister Kuldeep Dhaliwal, sugarcane farmers protesting for the last 28 days called off their agitation over pending cane dues by Phagwara sugar mill.

The decision was taken after a meeting with the minister in Amritsar, said Kirpal Singh Moosapur, vice president, Bharati Kisan Union (Doaba). The sugar mill owes dues of Rs 72 crore to the cane farmers.

Moosapur said Rs 23.76 crore would be received after the sale of a sugar mill property. The mill has a property in Haryana.

The state government has assured us to find a way out to clear our pending cane dues, said Satnam Singh Sahni, general secretary, BKU (Doaba).
