Sugarcane farmers demand increase in FRP; Plan to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha

Mysuru: Sugarcane farmers from Karnataka have decided to intensify their agitation for a hike in the sugarcane Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP).

According to the news report published in Thehindu.com, they are planning to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on October 5 to bring pressure on the Centre.

The farmers want the Union government to review the recent hike announced in FRP from Rs 2,850 per tonne to Rs 2,900 per tonne.

Karnataka Sugarcane Growers Association president Kurubur Shanthakumar said that the government has hiked the cane price by mere Rs 5 per quintal. This is an ‘unscientific’ hike in FRP. The input costs for cane cultivation have increased manifold including the labour cost, fertilizers and transportation cost.

“Farmers from different parts of the state will gather in Bengaluru on October 5 and lay siege to Vidhana Soudha to bring pressure on the Centre,” he further added.
