After a positive response from the Directorate of Sugar, sugarcane farmers are expecting that the NPKRR Cooperative Sugar Mill located in the Mayiladuthurai district would start operations soon, reports The Hindu.
The mill stopped operations in 2016 due to technical issues related to the production process.
Since the closure of the mill, around 2,800 farmers have been diverting their cane to the mills in Thanjavur and Cuddalore districts.
The Tamil Nadu Karumbu Vyavasayigal Sangam had moved the High Court over the revival of the sugar mill.
The HC had in 2021 stated that the issue is related to the matter of policy and economic considerations and the decision makers can resolve it.
After Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare M. R. K. Panneerselvam announced in the Assembly the possibility of the revival of the sugar mill, the Assembly Committee of Estimate, visited the Mill last August.
The mill can produce 10,500 tonnes of sugar per month, 4,500 tonnes of filter cake, 3000 tonnes of molasses, and 30,000 tonnes of bagasse.
The technical committee has forwarded a proposal for the revival of the machinery to start the sugar mill, said the Managing Director of NPKRR Cooperative Sugar Mill, Satheesh.
