Meerut: Sugarcane farming has always farmers favourite, but cane growers from Western Uttar Pradesh are now shifting their focus on banana cultivation. The profit in banana cultivation has motivated the farmers to shift from sugarcane to banana.
R S Sengar, professor, agricultural biotechnology at Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Agriculture University (SVBPAU) said, “The farmers get double profit from banana as compared to sugarcane.”
At present, the banana is grown over 250 hectares in Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Shamali and Bijnor districts. The University developed a special variety of banana Grand Nine (G9) which takes less time to grow.
