Amroha: Sugarcane farmers in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh are facing a financial crisis due to unpaid dues from sugar mills, reported Amar Ujala.
The three sugar mills in the district have failed to pay the full amount owed to farmers for the previous crushing season, which ended in May.
Currently, sugarcane farmers are awaiting payments totaling Rs 36.19 crore from these three mills, with Wave Sugar Mill having the highest outstanding amount of Rs 18.38 crore. Additionally, Rana Sugar Mill in Belbada owes Rs 6.81 crore, and Rana Sugar Mill in Kareemganj owes Rs 10.99 crore. The delay in clearing these dues has caused financial distress for the farmers.
Amroha district is home to 11 sugar mills, and sugarcane from the district is also supplied to neighboring districts such as Moradabad, Bijnor, and Sambhal. There are approximately 1,63,000 sugarcane farmers in the district. Despite the conclusion of the previous crushing season, these three sugar mills have encountered difficulties in making payments. According to the Sugarcane Department, the mills have a total outstanding payment of Rs 36.19 crore.
This situation has placed financial burdens on the farmers, making it challenging for them to cover daily expenses such as school fees for their children, medical expenses, and routine expenditures. With the upcoming crushing season set to begin in two to two-and-a-half months, farmers are hoping for prompt payment to alleviate their financial struggles.
