Sugarcane farmers’ income in Uttar Pradesh increases by an average of ₹43,364 per hectare

The income of sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh has seen a increase over the past several years, with the state striving to excel in timely sugarcane payments, according to the administration.

The Sugarcane Department has reported an average income increase of ₹43,364 per hectare for sugarcane farmers. Over 90 per cent of the sugarcane payments for the current crushing season have already been made, with 100 per cent payment completion reported by 86 sugar mills.

In the past seven years, sugar mills in the state have achieved record levels of production, crushing 7,386 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and producing 786.61 lakh tonnes of sugar. The average productivity of sugarcane has risen from 72.38 metric tonnes per hectare in 2016-17 to 84.10 metric tonnes per hectare in 2023-24.

Ethanol production has seen a substantial rise as well, growing from 420.7 million litres in 2016-17 to 1.7653 billion litres in 2023-24, reflecting the sector’s expanding capacity and contribution to the economy.
