Jalandhar: Sugarcane farmers have postponed their scheduled agitation on the Phagwara highway on August 25 as the government has assured them to transfer Rs 24 crore received after auctioning properties of the defaulting sugar mill to their bank accounts, reports Tribune India.
As many as 31 farm unions of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) had decided to participate in the agitation.
Bhartiya Kisan Union (Doaba) leaders that are spearheading demand for p said that the government has assured them that the money will be deposited in the bank accounts of farmers by August 30.
Manjit Singh Rai, President, BKU (Doaba) said, “We will organise our meeting on Thursday to discuss our future course of action. We will wait till August 30 as the government has assured us that Rs 24 crore received after selling the land of the defaulting sugar mill will be deposited in our accounts. Our agitation will however continue.”
Around hundreds of sugarcane farmers have launched sit-in agitation outside Golden Sandhar Sugar Mill on the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway since August 8 demanding to clear pending cane dues worth Rs 72 crore. The dues are pending for the past three years.
