Sugarcane farmers protest against sugar mill closure

Siswa Bazar, Uttar Pradesh: Indian Potash Limited has announced the closure of the sugar mill unit in Siswa due to technical issues in the turbine. Farmers claim that this decision by the mill management has left the them distressed. There are currently 25,000 quintals of sugarcane in the yard and five lakh quintals in the fields. Since Thursday morning, farmers have been protesting at the mill premises, with responsible authorities absent, escalating the farmers’ anger, reported Amar Ujala.

A resident of Siswa village in the mill premises stated that the sugar mill has been closed since for long. The mill management had assured earlier that crushing will begin soon, but the announcement of the mill closure on Wednesday has left the farmers feeling cheated.

Mahant Sankarshan Das Ram Anuj of Badhara Mahanth Mandir said that discussions with relevant officials regarding the diversion of sugarcane are underway, and a solution to the problem will be found. The interests of the farmers will not be ignored. All sugarcane will be diverted to other mills.

Omprakash Singh, District Cane Officer, said, dialogue is ongoing with relevant authorities for the resolution of the issue. The interests of the farmers will not be overlooked. All sugarcane will be sent to other mills.
