Shamli: Sugarcane farmers threaten to lock out sugar mill

Shamli (Uttar Pradesh): Farmers protesting at the Shamli sugar mill in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday threatened to lock out the mill on October 11 if they are not paid the full amount they are owed for sugarcane bill, reported Live Hindustan.

The farmers claim that the mill owes them around ₹238.71 crore from the previous crushing season. They say that the delay in payment is causing them financial hardship.

Protests by farmers regarding the payment for their sugarcane have continued for the third consecutive day at the mill. They have submitted a memorandum to the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Santosh Kumar Singh, warning of the impending blockade at the mill on October 11 if their demands for full sugarcane payment are not met.

Farmers have cited financial hardship resulting from the non-payment of dues, affecting various aspects of their lives, including challenges in paying electricity bills, school fees for their children, and managing expenses related to marriages and other life events.

Sanjeev Lilaun, Rishipal, Subhash, Khurshid, Fayaz, Souram Singh, Jaybir, Vinay Kumar, Balendra Singh, and Ilmchand were present at the protest.
