Sugarcane production increases in Khulna division of Bangladesh

In the Khulna division of Bangladesh, sugarcane cultivators are celebrating a year of exceptional production thanks to favorable weather conditions and the ready availability of agricultural inputs, reported Bangladeshpost.net.

According to reports from the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), a substantial 1,028 hectares of land have been dedicated to sugarcane cultivation in the last fiscal year 2022-23, yielding an impressive 50,947 metric tonnes of sugarcane. This marked a significant increase compared to the previous year.

To put this into perspective, in the fiscal year 2022-23, the sugarcane production figures were as follows: 3,060 metric tonnes from 68 hectares in Khulna, 10,847 metric tonnes from 285 hectares in Bagerhat, 4,560 metric tonnes from 95 hectares in Satkhira, and a substantial 32,480 metric tonnes from 580 hectares in Narail.

For the current fiscal year 2023-24, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set an ambitious target of cultivating sugarcane on 1,168 hectares with a production goal of 60,172 tonnes in the Khulna region.

Mohon Khumar Ghosh, Additional Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), attributes this success to the confluence of several factors. Favorable weather conditions played a crucial role, allowing for bumper production. Additionally, the availability of a consistent electricity supply and adequate irrigation facilities has contributed to this achievement. The DAE has also played its part by providing comprehensive support to sugarcane cultivators.
