Sugarcane will be weighed in Goa before sending it to Karnataka

Ponda: The Goa government will weigh sugarcane produced by local farmers in the state before sending it to Karnataka for processing. Cooperation minister Govind Gaude said, “The government has agreed to weigh cane at Sanjivani sugar mill, preferably at the mill’s weighing bridge.”

Harshad Prabhudesai, vice-president of Goa Sugarcane Cultivators’ Association, said, “This will help farmers to get good returns as there are chances of cane being pilfered in transit.”

The Sanjivani sugar mill is facing financial trouble due to a lack of adequate supply of cane. The farmers and employees from the mill are against shutting it. The mill has registered a loss of Rs 101.22 crore due to unavailability of sugarcane and various reason. The government made sure that sugarcane produced by farmers will be bought at the market price. State chief minister Pramod Sawant had assured farmers that those who produce sugarcane this season would not incur any loss. The government will purchase their sugarcane and supply it to the sugar mills in other states, besides providing support price to these farmers.
