Dwarikaganj, Sultanpur (Uttar Pradesh): The only farmers’ cooperative sugar mill in the district stopped operations on Monday morning around 10:30 am because there was not enough sugarcane. After the mill was closed, the management began reaching out to farmers to arrange for the supply of sugarcane. The mill will resume processing once a sufficient amount of sugarcane is collected, reported Amar Ujala.
The mill had to be closed because it did not receive enough sugarcane to operate. However, the management is working on gathering more cane. Due to the Makar Sankranti festival on Tuesday, many workers who had come from other areas to peel the sugarcane have gone home to celebrate, slowing down the peeling process. Additionally, most of the local villagers have gone to Prayagraj for a religious bath in the Ganges River. Light rain on Sunday also created problems in the harvesting of sugarcane.
The mill can crush 12,500 quintals of sugarcane per day, but with a lack of cane, operations had to be halted.
Rajendra Prasad, the chief manager of the mill, said they are working to get more sugarcane by contacting farmers. Cane is being stored at the mill, and once enough sugarcane is gathered, the mill will begin operations again.
