Bengaluru: A recent survey by LocalCircles has shed light on increasing sweet consumption patterns in Indian households, amid concerns over rising sugar intake, which now stands at 29 million tonnes annually, reported The New Indian Express.
According to the survey, 51 per cent of urban households consumed traditional Indian sweets three or more times a month compared with 41 per cent in 2023. In addition, 56 per cent of the respondents reported consuming bakery and packaged sweet products at least three times a month, while 18 per cent consume them daily.
In addition, more than 36,000 responses from households across 311 districts also supported a 25-75% reduction in sugar levels in sweet products at 55%.
The growing interest in healthier options is forcing manufacturers to increase low-sugar alternatives that go with emerging health-conscious customers, ensuring that their products do not fall into the Highly Processed or High Fat, Sugar or Salt (HFSS) category.
