Sugarcane farmers halted cane harvesting on Thursday as a part of their two-day stoppage call for various demands including FRP payment in one installment for their produce, reports Indian Express.
Farmers are agitating under the banner of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana belonging to former MP Raju Shetti.
Shetti has claimed that all the sugar mills in Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur districts have supported their agitation. He has also demanded a hike in the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar and ethanol.
“For the first time we are raising the issue of ethanol and expecting the government to accept our demands,” he said.
Shetti had launched a rally of cane farmers at Sugar Commissioner’s office earlier this month and had put forward demands. He then announced to launch a two-day stoppage of cane harvesting as a part of protest.
