Sweet deal for Salem sugarcane farmers: Government procurement boosts profits

Salem: Farmers in Salem district are enjoying improved profits, courtesy of the government’s significant procurement of sugarcane, as reported by sugarcane growers.

As per news report published in The Hindu, following the State Government’s declaration that sugarcane would be included in the Pongal hamper, the Revenue and Co-operative Departments in Salem and nearby districts initiated the procurement process from farmers in Poolampatti, Edappadi, Muthunaickenpatti, Kannantheri, Siddar Kovil, and Nangavalli localities, according to thehindu.

A sugarcane farmer from Poolampatti expressed satisfaction, stating that the government had announced a total price of Rs. 33 per sugarcane, covering transport and harvesting charges.

Expanding beyond Salem district, officials from Namakkal, Erode, Tiruppur, Dharmapuri, Karur, Coimbatore, and Nilgiris districts participated in the sugarcane procurement around the Poolampatti locality, according to the farmer.
