Madurai: The harvesting of ‘senkarumbu’ or Pongal karumbu has commenced in Madurai as the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation initiates the procurement of sugarcane for inclusion in the Pongal gift hamper, set to be distributed through PDS shops. The corporation aims to procure a total of 7.67 lakh sugarcanes for distribution to ration card holders in the district, reported The Times of India.
Officials have specified that the government has set the procurement price at Rs 33 per cane, and each cane should be at least six feet long without any damage. The procurement rate encompasses transportation and cutting charges. “We have initiated the procurement of sugarcane as per the government’s directive, and each cardholder will receive one sugarcane,” stated S Gurumurthy, Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies.
