Tamil Nadu: Dharmapuri sugar mills record highest recovery rate in state

Dharmapuri: Sugar mills in Dharmapuri district are crushing sugarcane and getting the most sugar out of it compared to other mills in Tamil Nadu. Subramaniya Siva Cooperative Sugarmill (SSCS) in Harur achieved the top spot in the state with a sugar recovery rate of 10.65% in the year 2023-24. Dharmapuri Cooperative Sugar Mill (DCSM) in Palcode secured the second position with a rate of 10.10%, reported The New Indian Express.

It has maintained this number-one position in the state for the last two years.

Dharmapuri district is one of the major sugarcane producers in Tamil Nadu. During 2023-24, SSCS processed an average of 2.84 lakh metric tonnes of cane with a recovery of 10.65 per cent. DCSM crushed 1.37 lakh metric tonnes of sugarcane with a recovery of 10.10 per cent.

R Priya, the Managing Director of SSCS, told TNIE, “Besides achieving the highest recovery rate, our mill also paid the highest price of 3,747.80 per tonne, totalling 92.2 crores to the farmers.”

Officials of the ranked second DCSM said, “In 2023-24, we crushed 1.37,778 lakh mt of sugarcane with a recovery rate of 10.10%. We provided remuneration to farmers at Rs 3,565 per tonne, including state government incentive. We are working on recovery rates by promoting advanced cultivation practices and creating awareness among farmers about the govt schemes. So far, we have registered close to 3,000 acres for cultivation in 2023-24.”
