Tamil Nadu: Farmers demand revival of sugar mill at Alanganallur

Madurai: Sugarcane farmers took out a march in Madurai demanding the revival of the National Cooperative Sugar mill located at Alanganallur on Monday, reports The Hindu.

Madurai district police stopped the agitating farmers at Achchampatti when they were heading towards Madurai Collectorate at Achchampatti. Police released them after they agreed to move to the collectorate peacefully.

The protest was led by Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers’ Association State President N. Palanisamy. For the last three seasons the mill has not crushed sugarcane, he said. The government had claimed that the mill needs Rs 10 crore for maintenance of the machinery but the amount has not been released so far, he said.

“Sugarcane cultivators in the Madurai and Dindigul districts demand the revival of the sugar mill as they are growing cane on over 5,000 acres of area in these two districts,” he said.
