Tamil Nadu: Farmers oppose cane diversion from Tirupattur sugar mill

Tirupattur: Sugarcane farmers in Tamil Nadu staged a protest outside the Tirupattur Co-operative sugar mill on Thursday, demanding action against officials blamed for hindering its operation and a planned diversion of cane to another facility, reported DTnext.

As per news report published in DTNext, sources stated that the Tirupattur facility plans to divert 1,000 tonnes of cane to the Subramania Siva Co-operative Sugar Mill in Dharmapuri as crushing is being affected due to issues with rollers in the mill.

The Tirupattur mill, boasting a daily crushing capacity of 1,250 tonnes (TCD – tonnes crushed daily), had set a target of 1.50 lakh tonnes for the season. This figure included 1.20 lakh tonnes from the mill’s cane and an additional 30,000 tonnes planned to be diverted from other regions.

Farmers expressed dissatisfaction, highlighting that lorry drivers are compelled to spend almost a week on the mill premises due to delays in lifting loads. The inadequate upkeep and maintenance of the sugar mill’s machinery have led to disruptions in crushing, prompting protests.
