Tamil Nadu government releases Rs 247 crore as special incentive price for sugarcane farmers

On Saturday, the Tamil Nadu government issued an order to allocate Rs 247 crore as a special incentive price for sugarcane farmers who supplied their produce to sugar mills during the 2023-24 crushing season. This initiative will benefit 1.2 lakh sugarcane farmers in the state. An official release stated, “Farmers who delivered cane to two public sector mills, 12 cooperative mills, and 16 private mills during the 2023-24 season will receive Rs 3,134.75 per metric tonne.”

Earlier this year, during the agriculture budget presentation, Agriculture Minister MRK Panneerselvam announced that the state government would provide a special incentive price of Rs 215 per metric tonne of sugarcane, in addition to the fair and remunerative price (FRP) set by the Union government.

The release mentioned that efforts are underway to expedite the disbursement of the special incentive price as soon as the details of eligible farmers who supplied sugarcane to the mills are collected. The Directorate of Sugar will review the data, and district-level committees, led by the respective district collectors, will then recommend the special incentive price.
