Tamil Nadu: Govt to constitute expert committee to assess and enhance performance of cooperative and public sector sugar mills

As part of a broader strategy to revitalize the State’s sugarcane industry, the government will form an expert committee in 2025-26 to evaluate and improve the performance of cooperative and public sector sugar mills, stated minister, reported DT Next.

To modernize sugarcane farming and boost production through newly developed high-yield varieties, the State government will promote advanced farming techniques, announced R. Rajendran, Minister for Sugar, Sugarcane Excise, and Sugarcane Development, during the Assembly session on Thursday.

Speaking during the debate on his department’s budget allocation, Rajendran revealed that Rs 24.5 lakh has been allocated to promote high-yield sugarcane varieties and innovative cultivation methods.

“These initiatives aim to reduce yield losses caused by climate change. We plan to establish 70 model fields across cooperative and public sector sugar mill areas with an investment of Rs 35,000 per hectare. These demonstration plots will help farmers witness the advantages of new varieties and technologies directly, encouraging widespread adoption,” he explained.

“Furthermore, Rs 28 lakh has been allocated to set up experimental fields within sugar mill estates and on progressive farmers’ lands. These fields will serve as testing grounds for high-yield, high-sugar-content varieties currently under research, ensuring the selection of the best crops suited to each region,” he added.

Rajendran concluded, “By blending scientific advancements with large-scale farming, the State government aims to strengthen the sugar industry, enhance farmer productivity, and boost efficiency in cooperative and public sector sugar mills.”
