Villupuram: The cane-crushing season for 2024-25 began at the Chengalrayan Co-operative Sugar Mill in Periyasevalai on Wednesday.
Sugarcane cultivated on nearly 9,987 acres by about 4,000 farmers has been registered for delivery to the mill this season. Officials estimate that around 2.75 lakh tonnes of sugarcane will be crushed during the period. The new season was inaugurated by Minister for Forests K. Ponmudy.
According to a release, farmers would get ₹3,151 per tonne of sugarcane. For encouraging the farmers, who registered and supplied the cane in the previous season of 2023-24, ₹215 more per tonne was paid as an incentive. As much as ₹7.37 crore was directly credited to the bank account of members of the sugar cooperative society.
