Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu: Sugarcane farmers from Tenkasi have launched indefinite sit-in protest n front of the Collectorate demanding pending sugarcane dues of Rs 24 crore from the three private sugar mills. Around 100 farmers have participated in this agitation.
According to the news report published in Newindianexpress.com, farmers had launched a two-day protest in October but withdrew their protest after the District collector G K Arun Sundar Thayalan assured them to clear their dues by October 25.
A M Palaniswami, state deputy president of Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers Association, who is leading the agitation, said, “Of the 42 government and private sugarcane mills in Tamil Nadu, 39 mills paid the dues to the farmers. However, three mills located at Vasudevanallur had not yet disbursed Rs 24 crore to the farmer. More than 21 months have been passed but the management has not cleared the farmers’ dues.”
