TamilNadu: Sugarcane farmers demand hike in sugarcane price

Salem: Monday’s grievances redressal meeting at the Salem Collectorate focused on a crucial issue of the procurement price of sugarcane, reported The Hindu.

Members of the Tamil Nadu Iyarkai Vivasayigal Munnetra Sangam submitted a petition to District Collector R. Brindha Devi, expressing concerns about the low prices for paddy and sugarcane, leading to farmer losses. The petition urged the government to raise the procurement price for paddy to ₹3,500 per quintal and sugarcane to ₹5,000 per tonne in the upcoming agriculture budget. Additionally, the farmers’ body advocated for the sale of coconut oil and groundnut oil in fair-price shops to support the livelihoods of coconut and groundnut farmers.
