Tanzania assures stable sugar supply despite production pause

Das es Salaam: Tanzanians can breathe easy despite a planned pause in domestic sugar production. The government has assured citizens of a steady supply of the sweetener, thanks to recent sugar imports and stable market prices, reported The Citizen.

This news comes after heavy rains since November 2023 dampened domestic sugar production, forcing the government to authorize sugar imports. The good news is that most of the approved 155,000 metric tonnes of sugar have already arrived in the country. Additionally, wholesale and retail sugar prices are holding steady in most regions.

Tanzanian sugar manufacturers traditionally take a break from production between March and May each year. This pause allows sucrose levels in sugarcane to recover after being diluted by the heavy rains. Higher sucrose levels mean more efficient sugar production when factories resume operations.

Professor Kenneth Bengesi, Director-General of the Sugar Board of Tanzania (SBT), addressed the nation’s concerns in a recent interview. He explained the government’s decision to increase sugar import allowances from 100,000 to 155,000 metric tonnes.

“We’ve secured over 80% of the authorized imports, with the remaining 27,000 tonnes on their way,” Prof. Bengesi said.

He further assured Tanzanians that the government will assess the situation later this month to determine if the imported sugar will be sufficient throughout the production pause.

Prof. Bengesi urged Tanzanians to relax, emphasizing that the country has ample sugar reserves to meet demand. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to maintaining stable sugar prices.

“Currently, sugar is selling between Sh2,800 and Sh3,200 per kilogram in most regions,” he stated. “While some remote areas might see slightly higher prices, the government is working to ensure they don’t exceed Sh3,200 per kilo.”

This news story assures Tanzanians of a smooth transition into the planned sugar production pause. With sufficient sugar stocks and stable prices, citizens can look forward to enjoying their cup of tea or favourite sweet treat without worry.
