Dar es Salaam: President Samia Suluhu Hassan unveiled plans on Wednesday to build a new industrial sugar factory in the Tanga Region as part of her administration’s efforts to reduce Tanzania’s dependence on imported sugar and save foreign currency, reported The Citizen.
Speaking during her regional tour in Pangani, President Hassan revealed that the factory will be strategically located near Tanga Port, with sugarcane estates set up along the Pangani River Basin. The project aims to increase local sugar production, create jobs, and drive economic growth in Pangani and the broader Tanga Region.
In addition to the sugar factory, the President highlighted the ongoing Bagamoyo-Pangani-Tanga-Horohoro road project, which is designed to improve regional connectivity and boost trade, tourism, and agriculture. The new road will connect major economic hubs, including the Bagamoyo Port and Special Economic Zone, the Port of Mombasa, and the Horohoro border with Kenya.
The initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to strengthening Tanzania’s industrial and agricultural sectors while enhancing infrastructure to support economic development.
