Tanzania sets target of producing 6,72,000 tons of sugar annually

The Tanzanian government has set a target of producing 672,000 tons of sugar annually by 2024 from the existing 367,000 tons.

Gerson Msigwa, chief spokesperson of the government said that apart from existing sugar produced, the additional 305,000 tonnes sugar will be produced by the industries of Kagera, Mtibwa and Kilombero. This will take the annual sugar production to 672,000 tons by 2024.

Speaking at a press conference he said that the government is taking several steps to increase sugar production and planning to set up new industries for sugar production.

The country in May 2020 had imported 25,000 tons of sugar to meet the domestic demand. The current domestic demand of the country is 420,000 tons per year.
