Hamburg: Pakistan has issued a fresh tender to purchase 200,000 tonnes of white sugar, said European traders on Thursday.
According to a news report by Reuters, the international tender has been issued by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan and the deadline for submission of price offers is August 24. The country expects shipment of the first 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes of sugar to be undertaken in only 15 days plus voyage time after the contract award.
The tender has been issued to increase the supply of sugar in the country to meet the domestic demand and arrest the rising prices. The Pakistan government in 2020 had decided to import sugar to meet the domestic demand as the country was facing a shortage of the commodity.
Pakistan is reeling under high sugar prices. According to the statistics department, in major cities of the country prices crossed Rs 100 per kg. In the recent past, Pakistan had issued many international tenders to purchase sugar. The country in 2020 had approved the import of sugar to meet the domestic shortage.
