Nizamabad: Sugarcane politics is playing a significant role in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh (UP), Karnataka, and other states. The issues surrounding sugarcane farmers, sugar mills, and government policies are in focus in the elections.
BJP candidate from Dharmapuri Arvind criticized the state government’s decision to release Rs 43 crore for the reopening of closed sugar factories in Nizamabad, Jagtial, and Medak districts as “an election stunt” by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, reported The New Indian Express.
Speaking at a press conference at the BJP office, he alleged that the state government paid Rs 43 crore to one of the banks to attract the attention of sugarcane farmers, employees and workers, instead of clearing the pending loans through instalments.
Arvind stated that although a committee had been appointed by Revanth to explore the reopening of sugar factories, the Chief Minister prematurely announced their reopening by September 17, disregarding the committee’s report. He called for the resignation of committee members in protest of the dismissal of their findings.
Arvind emphasized that reviving sugar factories would require a substantial investment of Rs 700 to Rs 800 crore and criticized the government for not conducting proper groundwork or formulating an action plan. He labelled the Chief Minister’s actions as mere political theatrics and suggested utilizing Revanth’s experience in real estate to resolve the issue effectively.
