Tereos SCA, a French conglomerate, is poised to maintain a vigorous pace of sugar production in Brazil, with plans to outshine competitors in the world’s leading sugar-exporting country, reported Bloomberg.
According to Pierre Santoul, CEO of Tereos’ Brazil division, the company is aiming to process a volume comparable to last year’s record 21 million tons of cane, surpassing the anticipated average for the drought-affected Center-South region.
“We’ve undertaken significant measures to enhance crop management,” Santoul informed reporters, noting that crops are now healthier and better equipped to withstand extreme weather conditions.
The upcoming harvest is set to commence as early as Monday, a slightly advanced schedule compared to previous years.
Tereos’ overall sugar output is expected to receive a boost from recent investments aimed at expanding industrial capacity for sweetener production from cane juice. The company intends to allocate approximately 70% of the cane towards sugar production, up from the previous year’s 68%. Consequently, ethanol production will decrease as sugar prices remain more appealing compared to biofuel, Santoul stated.
