Bangkok: Beating the set targets, Thailand exported 7.69 million tonnes of rice in 2022 which was 22.1% up from last year, said the commerce ministry.
The country had set a target to export 7.5 million tonnes and its top markets were Iraq, South Africa, China, and the United States, as per the statement released by the ministry.
The weak baht last year fuelled the increase in Thai rice exports. Thailand is the world’s third-largest rice exporter followed by India and Vietnam.
It had lowered its export target for 2023 from 8 million tonnes to 7.5 million tonnes after the appreciation of baht that was trading at 33.
