The scientists in Thailand have been working on creating a new strain of rice that would be resilient to the impacts of climatic changes and global warming, reports Fareasternagriculture.
Meechai Sangliw, a researcher at the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology said, “The new strain of rice will help farmers to reduce risks of crop loss if the rice fields are damaged due to floods, insects or bacterial outbreak.”
Charoen Laothamatas, president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, said, “We are not focusing on the development of new varieties of rice and if we overlook this then our competitiveness in the global market will be limited. We need to have new varieties with high yields to compete in the global market.”
